Three times the cost, half the accuracy and the shooter runs the risk of blowing his face off........I'll keep my regular M855 thanks.

Let's use this as an analogy: one could argue the P-51 Mustang is a lot more eco-friendly than, say, an F-15 or F-16. So, why does the Air Force fly F-15s and F-16s? Because our enemies fly jet aircraft like the MiG-21 and MiG-23, and we want the best aircraft we can produce to fight them with. It's that simple.

It should be of little concern if a weapon or ammunition is eco-friendly. I don't care if it's green, blue, yellow, red or purple with pink polka dots. All I want to know is if any weapon will allow our troops to better face down and kill our enemies. That's not just the major concern. It's the ONLY concern.

I can see having eco-friendly bullets for, say, target practice. However, when it comes to the real thing, our troops better have the real thing to fight the real enemy with. They, and we, need and deserve nothing less.

P.S. I probably dated myself with the MiG references. And, yes, the P-51 Mustang was a great airplane for its time.

I have a feeling this will end up on a shelf right next to those littoral combat yachts Kham's also always ranting about. From the sound of the article the Marines already gave it a "oh hell no". M-855 works fine for them due to the fact that they're still using M16's instead of the newer M4's. The issue with the original M-855 round wasn't the cartridge itself but that the shorter 14.5" barrel of the M-4 didn't give it enough velocity or spin, which meant it wouldn't fragment as intended when it hit a soft target but instead pass right through intact.

There have been a couple incidents/fuckups recently, which continue to illustrate the thing isnt ready for prime time anywhere. I waiting for the fiasco that happens in a year or 2 when the DDG-1000 prototype appears -- and how bad that goes; I expecting something like the Vasa launch, which would be cruel but would make the point in spades ...

On the plus side if they are dumb enough to make the switch over the civilian market will be flooded with super cheap ammo. Anything in 5.56 is still overpriced due to all the panic buying earlier in the year.
