Some posters aren't convinced this will work. Well, I AM a professional and I got my doubts. Its not all just math. Mind you, they righted the Oklahoma, and she was rolled worse, something like 160 degrees or so. She was of course, not quite as big, and built to much stronger tolerences. Having said that, she did have one side blown out. And it took a couple years. And she sunk on the way back to states under tow, so lot of variables One way or the other, there be youtube stuff to see

Should just sink it in place. Make an awesome tourist attraction for anybody who dives. The scrap value can't be worth anywhere near what they're paying to recover it.

Well....
scrap prices are always flexible, but at the moment, the current value of the Concordia would be somewhere north of 25 Million USD; now obviously you would have to get it to a shipbreaker (Turkey closest) OR make an arrangement to break up in place (likely more costly since the greenpricks types would go apeshit about environmental impact of the scrapping)

But there is a substantial dollar value for just the hulk

Estimates going around the net say 300-400 MILLION to raise her. Fuck that noise, pump the oil and other enviro-unfriendly gunk out of her and give her a shove off the edge of the cliff.

They really should have just scrapped her in place, but doing the smart thing never seems to be the first option planners come up with. Its not like the ship will be repaired or put back in service. Another triumph of the feel good over do good super-geniuses

Edit: Myn , one poster on shipspotting.com suggested the cost might be as high as half a billion euros Jesus, what price being completely retarded? The underwriters, not sure who, but they must be getting soaked. I think I would have set the damn wreck afire then detonated accidentally placed scuttling charges....

Salvage Update - underwriters edgy

Yeah given the ever-rising costs and possibility of failure , I'd be edgy too. Next week , still somewhat non-specific. Given the bill soaring to the moon, someone, somewhere is going to be either sacrificed or thrown to the dogs no matter how this turns out

Ya'll know how these things work. If you wreck a ship today you have to clean it up. Trashing something this big in place would only make a bigger mess and richer lawyers. The US Navy just got done cutting up a perfectly good minesweeper that got left on a reef in the Philippines. Bottom line is that this thing has to get gone and the neatest way to do it is in one big piece regardless of cost. Hopefully it will make cruise lines hire better mariners.

Thing is, they can only check the math so many times, and then its time to see what happens. Sure, it should work. But the reason Boeing > Airbus is because Boeing actually flight tests their birds, and the euro-wonks only simulate things. Guess which one I'd rather fly in? The danger is, something that big at a certain point once it is in motion, nothing and no one is gonna stop it. It's just physics at that stage. Watching should be interesting
