Old TOS Episodes

Postby kham » Sat Sep 28, 2013 12:40 am

Yet more examples why TOS > TNG and beyond... :)

The Doomsday Machine

Still one of my favourite episodes, even with the olde effects; the new ones other than the models just dont work I think. And clearly shows the difference between TNG ships and TOS ones; TNG they blow up at a random bump or hit, or some technobabble BS; here, The Connie has the shit literally pounded out of her, and she can still maneuver, and fight. Plus Kirk :D And, at 4:10, why Montgomery Scott is 5 kinds of awesome

Oh YES! Also my favorite episode growing up. It was the first episode that I remember showing another starship the same class as the Enterprise! The music by Sol Kaplan was some of the best sci fi music ever! William Windom's performance is legendary! :D

I was never a huge fan of the Next Generation. Although they did have some good scrips and stories here and there, for the most part the writing was mediocre at best to downright ridiculous.

Oh Kham, don't get me stared on the technobable.

"The Doomsday Machine" was one of Star Trek's finest episodes. It was a science fiction classic, and a classic piece of television drama.

What's remarkable about Star Trek TOS is how well it still holds up after all these years. The special effects weren't great by today's standards, but they got the job done. What really made it go, however, was the writing and the chemistry between Kirk, Spock and Dr. McCoy. I agree with Kham that Mr. Scott was many, many kinds of awesome.

I've often wondered how Capt. Picard of TNG would've handled the tribbles or the gangsters from "A Piece of the Action." For some reason, I can't image him telling Bella Oxmyx, "I'm sick and tired of playin' patty-cake with you penny-ante operators!"

Star Trek and Doctor Who are the two most successful television science fiction franchises ever. If MAD Magazine ever did a parody of Doctor Who, I know a line I'd like to have them throw in. You would show many of the famous characters from television and movie science fiction standing in the background and someone makes the comment, "We spend big bucks on spaceship models and special effects, and he gets around the universe in a phone booth!"

The Doomsday Machine is my ab fab #1 favorite episode of all time! :D I think it even won a Hugo or something for writing.

This episode scared the hell out of me as a kid, and keeps me glued to the edge of my seat even now. The music, the whole situation of Kirk waiting to be beamed up as the machine draws closer, and closer... I mean, we all knew he would make it.... but the ending is suspenseful enough to make you wonder... if only for a moment.

And let's not forget William Windom's haunting performance as Matt Decker. That anguished look on his face as he describes how his crew was begging him to beam them up, and he couldn't... This dialogue still gives me chills...

Decker: They say there's no devil, Jim, but there is, right out of Hell. I saw it!
Capt. Kirk: Matt, where's your crew?
Matt Decker: On the third planet.
Capt. Kirk: There IS no third planet!
Matt Decker: Don't you think I know that? There was, but not anymore! They called me; they BEGGED me for help, four hundred of them! I couldn't... I-I couldn't...

Then there's Decker's obsessive, yet understandable, need to avenge his dead crew which nearly gets The Enterprise wrecked... and his ultimate sacrifice provide a dramatic resonance to an already excellent episode, which included a bigger role for Scotty (LOVED how he was cursing in Gaelic when the jury rigging to get the transporter working shorts out at a critical moment), great interaction with Spock and McCoy and Decker, and... well... that's why it is a classic,

"Penny-ante operators?"
"Penny-ante operators!"

As much as I loved TNG, they never really came close to TOS when it came to delivery good comedy. Worf going Bluto on Geordi's lute in the "Qpid" episode is the one time I can remember laughing out loud at the show. DS9 did it on a couple of occasions, particularly the Ferengi-centered episodes and most especially in "Trials and Tribble-ations." That was classic Trek humor (literally).

"Don't you think I know that?" is probably the most haunting and effectively delivered lines from the original series, in my opinion.

Here's my version of the Doomsday Machine I did several years ago in Lightwave. I like the mesh, but the texture needs a lot of work. Enjoy!

It looks incredible to me, but, when it comes to special effects, I admit I'm behind the times.

I still recall being astonished by the original MacIntosh!

I've read at least one review of "The Doomsday Machine" which noted it was similar on Herman Melville's classic novel, "Moby Dick." Commodore Decker is Captain Ahab, obsessed with revenge against the machine which killed his crew, just as Ahab sought revenge against the great white whale. In the process, he nearly brings everyone around him to destruction.

William Shatner and William Windom both turned in outstanding performances. Shatner has been called one of the greatest "scenery chewers" of his generation, but this classically trained Shakespearean actor was also one of the best when he really got into a role. Windom was one of the most versatile actors ever, able to play almost any part and bring a touch of class to it. Does anyone recall him playing the doctor in "Murder, She Wrote"?

There was a curious subtext to "The Doomsday Machine," that of Kirk finding himself at odds with someone he clearly looks up to and respects. I get the impression Kirk sees Decker not simply as a superior, but also something of a friend and mentor. As the episode moves along, it's clear Kirk can see Decker is descending into insanity, but his feelings for Decker and his respect for him prevent him from taking action.

Everything finally boils over for Kirk when Decker nearly destroys the Enterprise in a futile attack on the planet killer. Kirk's explosive reaction is what one would expect from a man whose command has almost been destroyed. In addition, one also senses he feels betrayed by someone he looked up to.

Windom's Matt Decker appears to be a competent officer and commander who's overwhelmed by something he can't understand or defeat. He clearly blames himself for the loss of his crew, and the guilt and anger he feels have pushed him over the brink of insanity. One gets the feeling his driving the tiny shuttlecraft into the mouth of the machine isn't so much an attempt to destroy the machine as it is an attempt to destroy himself.

I agree with Kham regarding the spaceships. In much of sci-fi I see today, even warships are blown up with simple hits (explosions make such cool special effects). Look at the Constellation and the damage it took. Yet, it could still function and even go on the offensive. That's more what one would expect from a warship.

A great episode from perhaps the greatest American science fiction series ever.

Agreed "The Doomsday Machine" is one of the greatest TOS episodes. But none of the Trek series ever approached the grand scale of "Babylon 5." At the end of the Second Shadow War, you had both the Vorlon and the Shadow running amok, each race deploying their own Planet Killers, and vowing to destroy any races that sided with the other. And the episode "Severed Dreams" is about the most intense television I have ever watched.
