Actually, it's because they are rather small pictures. At 385x385, the forum displays an image in such a way that it shows it without any reduction. My guess is that because the image is a perfect square rather than a 4:3-ratio rectangle, it winds up putting the image in a space that is shorter than the image and puts up scroll bars to make the whole image viewable.
