A job at the library was a dream for the bookworm. She would spend the quiet hours going through the shelves, filling her mind and imagination with wondrous fantasies. The library was truly a magical place, where everything felt real.
Too real, perhaps. As was her habit, she was alone after hours. How long she had been mesmerised by the strange tome, she didn't know. She vaguely remembered reading passage about a curse that pulled the character into the ground - a peril that, admittedly, she found exciting. Feeling a little stiff and deciding it was time to go, she placed the book back on the shelf. Only then did she realise that she couldn't move. Looking down, she saw that the boring carpet had come alive - literally! The now-moving floor sucked at her heels. She struggled to pull them free, but each time she stepped out, she only plunged deeper. She gasped as the quicksand-floor swallowed her calves, then her knees. Soon, she was up to her thighs. She wrenched her leg free again, but now she was fearful that she would not get out again. Balancing precariously on one leg, she looked in horror as she continued to descend.
Was this all a figment of her imagination, or was she going in over her head?
