Tar Pit Escape?

Very few could escape the black embrace of the tar pits. Those who fell prey would be slowly consumed in the cold abyss and held firmly in place.
Nikki managed to pull herself from its grip. Her climb from its depths took all her strength, by the time she reached the surface her lungs were burning and she was beginning to panic. Her featureless black form slowly emerged onto solid ground. She was shocked to find her return to freedom was not met with much needed air, as the thick oily slime firmly covered her entire body.
She clawed at her face, her fingers slid over her smooth black head, unable to get any grip. She rolled and panicked, only making sounds of short grunts and slopping from the tar clinging to her body.
Nikki managed to pull open a hole at her face, taking in a much needed and deserved gasp of air, only to find the terrible ooze would reclaim the opening. Nikki fought long and hard for each breath. Wet sounds of the tar and the occasional gasp or short sharp panicked scream. The nightmarish slime would close up again almost with deliberate speed.
Her blackened form was anything but free of the oily embrace, the drier the tar got, the thicker it became.
