I'd like to cast my vote for #1 although there's not that many buried in sand fans around here.

I agree. I sometimes find the concept of being buried in sand just as interesting as sinking in quicksand.

Sorry for not having the story up yet. It's about 1/2 done, and I've had a lot of work suddenly dropped on me. Happens when you work via contracts.
In that particular story, the character isn't "buried" in sand. She sinks into quicksand in the desert after a rainstorm, and the ground dries within two days, and looks to investigators like she was buried standing up somehow.
