Congratulations on having the nerve to post your first story. Horrible feeling, isn't it?

I have to confess that when I see the name "Muttley" a certain image forms in my mind.....

Not a bad little story (not a long one, despite what you say - but then, I have form in this regard), and none the worse for treading familiar territory.

Since you ask, one writing tip I would make would be to use more full stops, rather than write in mega-sentences. Each of the first three paragraphs of the story proper, for example, consists of a single sentence of fifty words or more. The story would flow better if they were broken up.
In order to make an apple pie from scratch you first have to create the universe.

Despite what you said, it did not seem like a long story at all. I think you did very well with this one.

I especially liked how you described the damp jungle and the muddy ground and all those forboding signs. That made me expect Jane to stumble into quicksand at any turn.
