“You got to be kidding me! He needs what!”
“Stewart has his first biology lab and needs to collect bug samples. Can you drive him to where he needs to go?
“Stewie is 19 years old and in college! He doesn’t have a license, no friends, no life, seriously Steph, what is wrong with him?”
“Nothing is wrong with him. Stewart is brilliant and concerns himself with his studies. And please don’t call him “Stewie” he hates that.”
“Brilliant huh? But he can’t drive himself to get his bugs. Come on Steph stop covering for him.”
“Look Janice I’m at work and I need you to drive him. Can you please do this for me?”
“I was going to the casino for a slots tournament at 2. Ahhh, I can’t believe I have to drive Stewie, opps I mean Stewart to get his bugs!”
“Thank you Jan, I appreciate it. I’ll text him you’re coming.”
Janice drove to pick up Stewart at 1pm. She was trying to hurry to make the casino by 2pm.
“Ok dummy let’s go, get in. Where are we going?” Stewart handed her a piece of paper with the name of the place and directions.
“You know Stewie; your Mother thinks you’re brilliant. I think you’re just a lazy moron.”
Janice had always treated Stewart horribly when his mother wasn’t around. Belittling him every chance she could. The fact was Stewart is brilliant. He graduated top of his class in High School and had his choice of colleges. His focus had been academics rather than social skills. To those who don’t know him he appears shy and awkward. Aunt Janice was angry with her life choices being divorced twice and just over 40 years old. She took her anger out by bullying Stewart.
“Where going to that swamp out by the old airport, these bugs you need aren’t anywhere closer?”
Stewart nodded no.
“Jesus Stewie you can’t even answer me. All I can say is this better not make me late.”
They parked at the end of an old runway.
“Ok dummy lead then way and hurry up.”
As they walked on the edge of then swamp Stewart scanned for the bugs. He stopped and spotted some on a bush that the branches were just above the surface of the greenish water.
“Do you see them?” Janice asked
Steward nodded yes
“Great! Go get them! No? What do you mean No? Why are you shaking your head?”
Stewart pointed further down
“What! We are not walking all the way down there when the bugs are right out there! Oh give me that container.” Janice swiped the small plastic container out of Stewart’s hand. She hurriedly took off her T-Shirt and slide down her shorts. Kicked off her, shoes placed her keys and phone on top of her clothes and in her bra and panties waded in to the swamp carefully.
“I can’t believe I’m doing this.” Each step her foot squished with soft mud. The warm slimy water crept up her legs. The bottom was loose mud and it felt like a hand was grabbing her feet causing her to pull harder to break free. She reached the bush and carefully brushed several bugs into the plastic container snapping the lid shut with tiny holes poked through the top.
“Was that so hard?”
As Janice turned to come out, her feet were covered by the soft mud. The suction was keeping her from lifting her legs.
“What the hell…..It’s got my feet I can’t…”
She twisted and tried to lift her legs but nothing was working.
“Now I’m stuck. That’s just God Damn great. Ok Dummy you have to help me.” Janice threw the plastic container at Stewart’s feet.
Stewart shook his head no.
“No!?! What do you mean No!?”
“Quicksand”
“QUICKSAND?!” “Are you crazy? I’m stuck in this mud it isn’t quicksand. Jesus you are stupid! Now find something I can hold on to and help me out.”
Stewart repeated “Quicksand.”
“Look Stewie I’m not in……whoaaa….” The mud underneath was covering her ankles. She could feel the water against her bar soaking her nipples. “Hurry up and find something I don’t want to be here all day.”
Stewart watched from shore as Aunt Janice twisted and turned.
“Hey! I’m stuck! Do you get that! I’m up to my ankles in mud under here do you understand?” The slimy water was touching her shoulders while the mud sucked her down to just below her knees.
“OK, ok you are right, I’m in quicksand and I’m sinking, please help me.”
“Me? A dummy? What can I do?”
“Stewart I’m sorry for how I treated you. This mud is getting deeper and I need help. Please, please do something.”
Stewart could see Aunt Janice panicking. He took off his T-Shirt and shoes. Set his phone done and carefully stepped into the swamp.
“That’s it sweetheart give me your hand.” Aunt Janice reached for Stewart.
“Hurry baby I’m sinking fast.” She stretched her hand as far is at it go. Stewart reached but he only managed to touch her fingertips. Aunt Janice’s blond curly hair floated around her.
“A little more…..just another step…I can’t reach you…..I’m going under...”
Stewart could have easily grabbed her hand but he didn’t budge.
“Help! The mud….grhummmm…..hrummm……Stew……..grummmm….”
Aunt Janice was choking on water as she went under. Stewart watched as she waved her hands until they were gone. Bubbles began to break the surface.
Pop….blub…….blub…..blub…..
“I told you it was quicksand, should have listened to me.”
Stewart walked back out and as he got dressed his phone rang.
“Oh hi Mom. Yes, everything went fine, just as I planned.
