Quicksand is so unfair. It’s liquid enough that you can sink in it, but not liquid enough that you can swim in it. It’s solid enough to trap and hold you in place, but not solid enough to walk on it and support your weight. It looks solid, but it’s not solid. It’s very soft and easy to get in to, but very strong and hard to get out of. If you struggle, you sink deeper. If you don’t struggle, you’ll remain stuck there. The more you try to pull up, the more it pulls you down. And if the tides are coming in, you have to move fast. But the faster you move, the deeper you sink. It behaves like it’s alive, but it’s unaware and completely indifferent about you.

And it keeps you in suspense - it keeps you in an impasse. It lets you sink in, but will neither let you get out as easily as you sank in, nor will it "finish the job" (i.e., swallow you).

It’s nature’s human fly trap!
