CYOA: A Lake Without a Name - Part 07b

"This isn't working. I have a better idea," you say as you let go. It's actually not quite true, because you're really not sure what you should do next. But first you must safe yourself so you can save this girl. You try to get back onto your knees which are still in contact with solid ground, but instead they begin to slide forward into the bog. Next you attempt to assist by pushing against the muck with your arms. The surface offers too little resistance to get yourself up this way either. Carefully you paddle back with your arms, but you are barely moving in the intended direction. Your torso is however slowly gliding deeper into the bog's grasp.

The girl is watching your struggles with a worried expression. She is trying her best to remain calm and motionless, but is sinking deeper nevertheless. Her breasts are already submerged and the muck is at her armpits. Both are arms are resting on the surface, waiting for something to hold on to.

After a while you try to roll to one side rather than pulling back directly. You sink a little deeper, but at least your feet remain on solid ground and you are actually moving somewhere. Step by step with carefully executed movements you shift more of your body onto safer ground. It takes a lot longer than you would have hoped, but finally you get up. You are covered in swamp muck from head to toe, also standing to your shins in it.

The blonde girl's shoulders vanish from sight. You seem to be no closer to saving her than when you first found her, but she is a lot deeper by now. "Please, hurry!" she says in a soft worried tone, trying hard not to panic.
