Video tour of the new bog I found

Postby Raptor90 » Mon May 28, 2012 10:58 pm

First off, sorry for the poor quality and editing, it was done with a Sony point and shoot camera and windows movie maker. Its of a swamp in Waverly, Nova Scotia called 'Caribou Bog'. Its obviously a peat bog, I know a lot are not into these, but its all I have to work with right now, the only downside so far with these bogs is they're infested with mosquitoes and other bugs that some times leave a few itchy marks, other than that, its pretty good. Just waiting for the hotter weather to come to dry up some of the water and improve the quality of the good stuff. 8-)

Basically I start off showing a google earth screen shot of where I park and walk into the woods, followed by a clip of video, and progress it along the way. The deer/horse flies were brutal today too x_X

From about 3:00 onward are the spots I tend to frequent as of late since I haven't yet felt any 'bottom' to them other than a soft mucky feel that is easy to agitate and go down through.

I do plan to hopefully do a vid or two of a few jumps, but I have no tripod or anything atm.

Nice "you are there" tour, Raptor! Looks like a sweet spot. :D

I know about the bugs.... my sinking spot is good from June on, but I can't really access it until mid to late July because of the swarms of damn deerflies. :x

I did take a week of holidays around the time when it is prime, though.... ;)

That wasn't meant to be nasty or anything... just me taking a friendly dig. I'm sorry if you took it badly :( *Shakes Garry's hand*

That is a nice tour of your new bog. There are quite a few interesting looking bare patches there that look like they could suck some unwary hiker into its depths!

I never let the bugs bother me. I always cover myself in DEET, and the annoying buzzing then fades away. 8-) But, emerging and cleanup does result in the bugs attacking again until I make my skin toxic again once I clean off.

If you want the perfect tripod for shooting sinks in places like that, you should try a Gorillapod! You can wrap it around a stick, and stick it into the firmer layer of ground beside the sinking spots, just like I do, and if a handy tree/bush is nearby and it is strong enough, you can wrap it around that. You can find it in places that sell cameras and equipment, such as the electronics stores The Source and Future Shop (looks like Dynex and Optex have similar products).

I sink, therefore I WAM!!!!

Yeah, I was having a conversation with someone else about those. Probably an investment I'll make soon. Also I need to drag back some old boards or flat solid surfaces to put around the edges of these holes, its hard to keep your footing on the edges.
