It doesn't happen enough any more here on Quicksandfans to even be worth mentioning except, the OP was looking for advice and I was hoping that having a way to read over his own text before hitting "submit" would help him.

However, I still use the tactic for more complex posts. Just to be safe. I hate re-doing anything!

I think there are multiple issues (two at least and maybe three) getting confabulated here. One is a delay in an edit due to the need for moderation. The second appears to be some rare issue will edits that do not require moderation; possibly a timeout error if the edit takes a long time and possibly some other error occurring more or less randomly within the databases involved. I occasionally saw errors I believed to be of that time when uploading a series of attachments. I'd get a few of them uploaded and then there would be an error. Sometimes everything was lost and sometimes only the most recent attachment attempt. That seems to have stopped now that a whole set of attachments can be uploaded in one step.

The only timeout error I get is if I spend too much time editing a lengthy post without doing any board activities such as checking for new posts, I wind up getting logged off the board, forcing me to log back in before being able to submit or save the text. I find it easy to recover from that. So, if you have to spend a lot of time editing a post, periodically check for new posts, browse other forums, or just do anything on the board to keep it from timing out. Only one action is needed at a time to delay the timeout.
I sink, therefore I WAM!!!!
