Image & Other Attachment Viewing/Download Issues

Postby Boggy Man » Sun Mar 20, 2022 8:59 am

Over the past few days, I have begun to notice that when I load this site, the images are now very slow to download, including the thumbnails, like back when using a dialup modem. When I try viewing/downloading photos, they either take forever to load completely, or start to load very slowly and then seem to either time out with an error or are incomplete, if they are very large (like ones in the "The Art Of Sinking" thread). When I try and download a video on this site, such as one of Fred588's Teaser Teasers, it loads very slowly (around 21 kB/sec) for a while before eventually failing. But, MPV video trailers download quickly and normally, because they are at mpvstuff.com. Other websites work normally, but for some reason this one doesn't. :? I am using Firefox 98.0.1 (64-bit).

Has anyone else had any recent issues like this?

I just downloaded one of my own Teaser Teasers and found no issues. Perhaps the problem is local or has been resolved.

One thing has HAVE noticed over recent months is that the time to UPLOAD my teaser teasers is considerably longer than the same at quicksandland.com. However, although it is slower it is nowhere near as much slower as your post says.

The only thing I've ever noticed is probably 75% of the time, ANY page on QSF loads super slow on my iPad, like up to a minute or more if the page has a lot of pictures, like sixgunzloaded's "Happy Holidays 2021!" thread might take two minutes to fully load.

If I switch to my laptop on the same day, every page loads within seconds. Even downloading AWSands21's artwork only takes like 4-6 seconds.

Might not have anything to do with QSF, maybe it's just my dumb iPad.
Finally broke down and went to see a psychologist. She told me I just have an overactive imagination—and it really excited her. We're going sinking next weekend. Theo's AI Quicksandbox New stuff every weekend (unless life gets in the way)

I would suspect something that is always different between the two machines but not always the same in the IPad. That could be too much going on in the background, a low memory condition
, or something with your service provider. In the case of what I reported, involving the two forums, everything was the same at my end.

Yeah who knows. I do clear my background tasks often and I think it's not even half full on memory, but it is five years old.

Glitches are strange. With my newest computer, which is very fast and has 32G of RAM, after having been booted for a few weeks, things such as attaching a thumb drive begins to take longer and longer. A re-boot fixes it for another few weeks. My main editing machine, less than two years old, sometimes starts to be unable to display the video track smoothly. Re-selecting the speakers being used, to the same setting, fixes that. Its weird.

Part of that is just Windows. On certain tasks it grabs resources like memory and never lets them go. Computers like a reboot which sets all the buffers and registers to zero and clears those stolen resources. I used to have to "reboot" an NCR 9800 mainframe once a week for the same reason many years ago (1991).
It's a dirty job but I got to do it for over 20 years. Thank you.

I have been saying this for nearly forty years but what we need are computers that do what we thought we told it to do rather than what we actually told it to do. And, of course, access to technical assistance would be nice from time to time. I have a rather complex and large computer set up with four computers, about 145T of external storage, and two routers. One router is connected to the internet and two of the computers. I recently acquired the second router with the intention of creating a network between the two machines not on the internet in order to share the external drives. I intended to do that in a wireless manner as the computer room is a spaghetti of wires already. Both machines immediately saw the network already established on the router and connected easily. They could not see each other, however. It made no difference what sharing settings I changed. It looked like the system requires a connection of some sort at the router port that would go to the modem. I solved the problem by adding to the wire spaghetti - ethernet from each computer to the new router. Now it all works perfectly but it would have been better if the wires were not needed.

Curiously, if I disconnected by main internet machine from the internet network and then connected to the network on the new router (all before adding the ethernet wires, that machine COULD see the shared files on the other machines. I would blame the cat if I had a cat.

Now you know how I have a job. The technical stuff is pointless. It's gremlins and faulty feng shui. The furniture is arranged incorrectly.
