I appreciate these posts because I have a fetish and phobia in equal parts, and I like to be prepared.
Thanks again.
I saw it, and I wasn't even aware that the movie had a scene in it. So, when it happened, I was really surprised. In all honesty, in the lead up to the scene, I was like, "oh shit, there's going to be a quicksand scene in this movie, isn't there?"
SPOILER ALERT:
Okay, so the word doesn't get said.
It's Benicio del Toro in quicksand.
Michael Cera saves him, by diving in.
By the time you see Benicio del Toro, he's already up to his neck. And then in the next scene he's up to his chin, and then he's gone.
Michael Cera dives in, just like in the Princess Bride.
del Toro's character is rescued, and he's covered in gray ooze and his clothes are stained that color for a good portion of the movie afterwards (as is/are Michael Cera's).
While in the sand he has a near-death experience, where he meets God and Bill Murray portrays God.
After del Toro's character is rescued (and after the near-death experience) he spits out a bunch of gray crud.
I think they did a great job on the pit, personally. It has a really great sandy look and really undulated nicely. The gray stuff they were covered in afterwards was clearly applied as makeup afterwards.
I honestly didn't like the movie that much. If you want to go see a great Wes Anderson movie, see Rushmore. The Royal Tannenbaums is also good. The Grand Budapest Hotel is probably third, and I would place The Life Aquatic as fourth. Everything else just doesn't stack up very well.
