Many thanks to you for locating and listing these. They are all more than interesting but like Robert I find the double especially so. Wonder if there's a version with a half-dozen bikini girls inolved? 8-)
It's a dirty job but I got to do it for 27 years. Thank you.

There was quite a bit more to this than just locating and listing.

Just sayin'...... ;)

Agreed. I guess I wasn't detailed enough but thanks all the same for discovering and making all of these scenes known to us that might otherwise have gone unnoticed.

The part about the half-dozen bikini girls was merely a jest.

thanks again.

These are really among the most awesome videos I have ever seen. The media is polystyrene (styrofoam) beads, a standard packing material. The beads have obviously been died tan to look like sand for this game show. If you look, you can see that the female contestants have been given special shoes to wear, sort of like plexiglass platforms that are bigger in area than a regular shoe. This is probably because, unlike real quicksand, styrofoam is less dense than the human body. The platforms keep them from sinking too quickly (no pun intended). So these women are really sinking into something less dense than their bodies, and they will thus inevitably sink under, as is the case in each video. Also, there are plenty of spaces between the beads, so the women can still breathe after they go under - in fact, one of them is still talking after her head goes under.

So there is some safety there that is different from the South American reality show where the woman steps into what is a (fake) real watery bog and is sinking while some guys engage in a tug of war. If she goes under, she can't breathe. But this Japanese show circumvents the safety, breathing issue.

An aside question: has anyone out there tried to create a fake pit using styrofoam beads? It might be a bit expensive, if my hits on line are accurate. But it is a totally clean way to sink, so maybe would be appealing to some significant others than a real bog would be. Just asking.

Thanks for posting.

To answer the question about if anyone has tried using the styro beads, I believe that Jim Weathers has done that at least once. I've only seen stills of that project, however, so I have no idea how well it turned out.

Fred - You have had a lot of experience with a lot of different substances. I am an engineer by trade, and the foam beads idea just looks like a promising one from a practical standpoint - no need to pump water up from beneath, etc. Of course, when they go to the close-up of the girls' at neck-deep, you can see that it is composed of a bunch of little spheres of styrofoam, so that is not too cool. But if you watch it from a distance the whole time, it looks like a great dry quicksand scene, with good movement of the quicksand medium. Just an interesting series of filmed scenes. I would think that it might be a promising idea for a film producer, kind of like the cork pit idea.

You might be right. However, it would be my opinion that the styro is a bit TOO light, both in weight and in color. If a similar foam could be formulated, but with some additive to give it more density and a darker color I would very seriously consider it.
