Woh - male sinking

From episode 42 of a supernatural TV series called Woh...

At the 3:42 mark, two guys fall into a vat of very watery sawdust quicksand/sludge and throughout the rest of the 20 minute episode, slowly sink out of sight. A pair of baddies arrive to taunt them, then one has a change of heart and tries to rescue them, but his partner hits him with a pole and knocks the guy into the vat where he vanishes instantly.

In the next ep, both guys are fine, and rescue others from non-sinking peril. I'm guessing magic or something...

Frankly, I have no real idea what is going on in this.... but I did like how the sinking played out.
