First Youtube sinking

Postby rgadt » Sun Nov 29, 2009 2:53 am

This is my first try at a video clip of me sinking into mud/quicksand (parts 1 thru 3 aren't very interesting, I didn't even post part 3) so it's not the best but I'm learning as I go. I could've sank deeper in the one spot but I wanted to explore some more before the recording ran out. More to come depending on weather and when I get to sneak off and get muddy ;).

When you said you liked boots -- you meant BOOTS!

(Maybe I need to expand my boot horizons to above the knee next spring.)

You are a bit far from the camera in the first one but I could see the sinking. That's a photogenic location anyway. You appear to be disappearing into a natural cave when you walk back into the dark.

Looks like you got some good gratifying booted-foot suction in the second. There's an odd concrete siding on the right side of the screen that makes me think it's by a road or a bridge of some kind. Is it?

The tripod thing is tricky. The hardest thing about it is that you have no human to tell you if you're even in the frame. I drag my camera around a lot trying to get a good angle but to be honest, I do have a lot of shots with body parts cropped off anyway!

The girl in the nice knee boots wading-into-mud shot is Lyann:
http://www.already4u.com

She waded all the way across a little mud flat, sinking at least mid-thigh deep, fabulous lady!!!
I thought it would make a nice avatar, sort of not knowing how deep she's going to go :)
Thanks for the question, sorry for the delay in replying.

BOOTS- well, I've got lots of knee boots but I really love thigh high boots, and now I've got a decent collection of them so I can take some of them sinking. I also plan to take some of my knee boots out to get muddy at some point in time. The only thing about thigh high or over-the-knee boots is there aren't too many with what I would call moderate heels- around 2" or so. Most of them are either flats, or 4" or higher. There are a few around with 3" heels (especially since they're popular this season) but not many. Takes a lot of watching on eBay to find them. But after a fair amount of practice walking on 5" heels isn't that difficult (I have strong calves which helps). I just have to watch my step, as you can see in the video. As I've said before I like them snug which helps them stay up better (and they don't fill up with sand or mud). Most thigh high boots seem to be made for women about 5'6" which although is fine for them, they stop a little short on 6'0" me, but if I stick with at least 28"-30" high boots I'm satisfied. I'd like to get some crotch high boots but I can't afford to spend $130-$200 for a pair of decent ones.

Location- that was a small stream that had a new road built across it. The concrete is from the culvert structure under the bridge. Sand has washed down across the culvert and accumulated both on the flat concrete and farther downstream in the bends of the creek where I was sinking deeper. I like the nice squishy sound when my boots were repeatedly sinking just ankle deep, stopping at the concrete; wished it had been a little deeper in a few places. The one spot where I did sink calf deep I got slightly stuck, lost my balance and landed on my rear with a splat  The sand in the streambed came from somewhere upstream- I'm not exactly sure where, the area is all surrounded by development. When the weather warms up I'm going to go exploring back upstream to see if there are any good sinking spots up that way. The downstream side (past the bend where I disappear for a minute) ties into a deeper stream where I might find some mud next summer if it dries up. If you listen in the background noise, you can hear cars driving by occasionally. There is a fairly busy 6-lane road about a quarter of a mile away. Yeah, I have to learn to stop every so often and relocate the camera so it's where the action is. I was concerned at first that someone driving by might see the camera and tripod and try to swipe it, but most people driving by are doing 45 mph so they don't even see it. Plus, back off the road where I was sinking deep nobody was going to see it (or me) anyway. I try to visualize where I'm going to end up in the shot but I was using my camera at the wide-angle end of the focal range, which is OK for a side shot, but as the video shows you get very small very fast. At some point I'm going to try some handheld video (my Canon S3IS has image stabilization which helps a little) but I worry about dunking it in mud or water. I may try getting a cheap video camera later but this will have to do for now. It will record up to 2GB which is Youtube's limit anyway.
Thanks for checking it out and replying, Nessie :).

Sure, I don't mind replying at all, I'm just late getting back to check the thread. Sorry.
