Everything you always wanted to know about quicksand...
Came across this clipping years ago and decided to save it for a muddy day...

There's another locomotive at the bottom of a swamp North of Cuba, NY, where the now abandoned former B&O branch ran along the towpath of the former Genesee Valley Canal. According to Granddad, the locomotive derailed at low speed and landed in the swamp. There were no injuries, and the crew hiked back to town. The next day the "big hook" (salvage crane) was dispatched to recover the engine. It wasn't there- it had sunk completely into the swamp. The decision was made that the old engine wasn't worth the labor that would be required to dig it out of the bog, so it lies there to this day.
