I've been reading this book by Steve Berry and was totally surprise by a quicksand scene. Takes place when the good and bad guys are all in a cave trying to get to some treasure. There is an area covered by a thin layer of water and some numbered flat rocks. The idea is to step on the correctly numbered rocks to get safely across. If you step on the wrong ones, the mud does not support you and you'll sink down and die. One of the bad guys goes first and takes a misstep and sure enough sinks to his doom. Despite the obvious description neither the narration nor the characters refer to this as quicksand.
For those who like Dan Brown style thrillers, he writes in that style.

Re: The Columbus Affair
Sounds a bit like that scene in "The Scorpion King" where out hero is evading a bunch of soldiers in a cave;one of them steps on the sand and disappears in a second; the officer tells them "Stay on the stones".
"Aaaaaarrrrrrggggghhhhh! Quicksand! I'm sinking! I'll go straight to the bottom of.......GLURP!"
(a month later)
"Ugh! Yukkkh! Ptui! I'm out of it! I'm free! Not even quicksand can defeat the power of.....the Eye of Zoltec!"
