Grace McHugh and Owen Carter lost their lives in the production of this film on location on the Arkansas River in Colorado. While re-shooting a scene of Grace McHugh fording the river on horseback her horse lost its footing and she was thrown into the swift current. Owen Carter stopped filming and plunged into the river to save her. Together they succeeded to reaching a sandbar, which proved to be quicksand, and both perished. Shooting of the picture was otherwise complete and the film was released with the body of work by Grace McHugh and Owen Carter intact.

I've been by the Arkansas River many a time and I think what was going on is that the current can be very strong. I suspect no one actually sank in quicksand. What is more likely to have happened is that while in the raging current they reached the quicksand bar and it simply melted away and they could not pull themselves up on it and were washed away.

I stepped on a quicksand bar once. It was so loose it basically dissolved under my feet. But it was only knee-thigh depth

Very unfortunate. And interestingly, some news reports say she was in a a boat that capsized: https://www.coloradohistoricnewspapers. ... --------0-
