There is a competition, and the obstacle course contains a "Shifting Sand Bath", which Akane and Ranma get trapped in. It is in Season 5, Episode 7.

The scene starts shortly after the 15 minute mark. Enjoy! 8-)

Indeed, pretty entertaining.

I'm a big anime fan, massive collection of DVDs... yet somehow I've seen about three episodes of Ranma. Funny that, given that what I've seen I did enjoy. I guess it was just kinda before my time, and it always seemed a bit daunting to get into something hundreds of episodes long after it has already finished.
