In the book, this is a WEIRD scene. The character falls into the mud, gets stuck. He thinks he'll be trapped there, and rather than die slowly from exposure or whatever, decides to commit suicide by overdosing on speed. He comes to his senses, but seriously, it's "Oh, no! I'm in quicksand! I know what I'll do! Take all the speed!"
