I just realised something about this artist: their angle is recreating scenes from classic Tomb Raider games.
For those who don't know this particular game, there's a mission set in the South Pacific titled "Crash Site" that involves Lara Croft jumping over a sequence of leaves floating on a quicksand swamp.

Walkthroughs and speed-runs make it look flawless, but a blind playthrough will reveal the peril that we love:
https://youtu.be/KNg-WBoQoNE?t=188There's a certain amount of excitement and anxiety in the scenario. You can imagine Lara playing this out: standing precariously on each leaf, feeling it move with the shifting quicksand, perhaps under a time limit as it might collapse at any point, but having to check the map to make sure the next one is safe. The the inevitable missed jump, plunging her into inescapable quicksand.
This makes the photo shoot even more tantalising. We can imagine that Lara in the photo has tried to cross an even larger expanse of quicksand and, just mere feet from the shore, has fallen short. We know that in the game, missing a jump is game over - there is no escape from the quicksand in this level. So in this real photo, we know that no matter how much she tries to reach for that branch, there's no way but down...
It's almost a shame that while the artist has covered the Indian Jungle level as well as the Nevada level, she didn't pose for a QS shot there. The QS traps from the games are here.
