No woman walks away from Zane Westmoreland. But when Channing Hastings does just that, it leaves the rancher reeling—and then she returns to town engaged! Zane will do whatever it takes to show her that there is no man for her but him.
Plus a Brenda Jackson favorite from The Steele Family series Intimate Seduction
There is one pivotal quicksand scene.
Female secondary character Channing has a lovers quarrel with lead character Zane and storms out to the beach at night. She wanders into quicksand and sinks helplessly under a full moon with the tide coming in, struggling at times, sinking to her waist. Zane and friends come searching for Channing and find up her to her breasts. She sinks to her neck as they find a rope to free her. Zane instructs her on how to float and they pull her free, cementing their romance.
Sinkiness: 4/5
This is the classic damsel in distress being trapped by the rising tide while struggling in quicksand under the moonlight scenario. It's a short scene, but the narration does make it a point to reveal that the character is steadily sinking into the quicksand rather than skipping out on that detail, giving us a good pace to go by. It's a good dramatic scene, though lacking in some description, focusing more on the emotional tension.
