No Quicksand in Okefenokee

Postby Gitget » Thu Oct 19, 2023 1:23 am

I saw movies when I was a kid with quicksand in old Oke.
I always wanted to believe (just like in the Polar Express) there was real quicksand there.
But I read this from an old article from the NY Times.

The floating islands are spongy to walk upon and led the Indians to call this swamp Okefenokee - ''land of the trembling earth.'' It may tremble but, contrary to popular myth, there is no quicksand in the Okefenokee.

I'm so depressed.

Don't believe everything you read from the NY freakin' Times.
It's a big place and, if it's a swamp, (which it obviously is) I'd be willing to bet one could find some sort of qs if they looked hard enough. Or at least deep mud. Never been there myself, but I'd put money on it.
What does a big city news rag know about finding qs anyway? Don't lose hope!
How long did Tarzan watch before deciding to save Jill..?

It is quite possible, if not likely, that you are both correct. All could swing on the definition of quicksand. If the definition is sand made quick by the flow of water then the NYTis probably correct. But if the definition is any form of relatively deep mud then you are probably right. You could be proven right by someone simply finding some. The Times story, on the other hand, could be proven wrong in the same manner but it cannot be proven correct. It is impossible to prove that something does not exist. Doing so is called "proving a negative."

My nephew and I have this argument all the time about the existence of Sasquatch (yeah, I know it's off-topic). I say 'Yes', he says 'No'. He says, 'Prove it', I say 'Maybe one day I will, but you'll never be able to prove it doesn't'
If I ever meet the big guy - who's been sighted in Okefenokee, I do believe - I'll ask him if there's qs there. If anybody would know better than the Indians, it'd be him! :D :ugeek:

While it is very true one can never prove something does not exist, the fact it cannot be proved does not mean it does exist. It does, however, create an economic incentive for those who want to make money telling people it does.

No, the way we cash in is we simultaneously make two movies. One is called "Search for Sasquatch in the Okeefenokie," and the other is called "Search for Quicksand in the Okeefenokie." We finance the project using GoFundMe, and then we recruit a whole bunch of people who will pay to help in the search. We'll say we need so many people because we only have a week. hen we blame the weather when we run out of time.

Oooo!! I have an idea how we could do it! We recruit Dave and his fine crew for one expedition and one of our other excellent producers for the other, then all the lovely ladies from both studios to be our teams in the field!
We tramp all around in the swamp and see who finds their objective first! We have somebody filming the entire time and then we sell the video as found footage! We make a mint!!! :D

See Gitget? No reason to be depressed! ;)
