Don't you then create a large air-filled bubble that has to be pushed down under the surface? And as far as i understand your picture there is a high risk that the model would turn upside down suddenly.
Fred and i did discuss this topic, too. And as far as my experience tells, it should be perfectly safe and easy for models to wear chestwaders in the watery kind of pits. The waders would just slowly fill up with water and mud and even swimming around or going under or whatever the story says is just as easy as with any other kind of garment. Going all the way under and plopping back to the surface is no problem!!
The thing that is difficult is lifting those water-filled waders above the surface. Lets say, she's wearing chest waders that reach just below her armpits (the TALL kind):
Model is a fisher-woman that falls in the mud-bog, sinks slowly to her doom, end of story. Rising up again is no problem as long as the now water-filled waders stay (just) below the surface. The mud/water inside is just as heavy as the mud/water outside the waders and there is no force that holds you down (thats a myth!) Gravity just starts working when she wants to climb out of the pit, this would need the help of the crew.
I would suggest trying this out by yourself (Fred?) or your most experienced model in the most watery pit (or even a swimming pool for a start). I would NOT recommend that in the sticky and thick mud-bogs you have. (only for expert sinkers).
There are also not so many true womens-waders available at the market. Over here in Europe there are a few manufacturers that produce more form-fitting chestwaders in youths/womens-sizes. Don't know about the US, though.
