I tend to use a water proof camera, although I still try to avoid it getting muddy. But, any mud can be washed away from the camera, although getting mud in the speaker and microphone holes might be a problem. I use a Gorrillapod for mounting my camera to a branch/stick, so that I can catch my sinks on video. Before I used a Gorillapod, when I used to take video "selfies", I would have a plastic container nearby to set the camera in once I was finished with it, and needed both hands to escape the mud.
I sink, therefore I WAM!!!!
