This is just to wish everyone a happy, and safe, Independence Day Holiday. Please keep the fireworks under control and try to remember, before its too late, that too many hotdogs are not really such a good idea.
And for those in other countries, please have a happy and safe July day.

I have strong suspicion that the squirrels who keep raiding my tomato plants are communist. While grilling today I'll be firing some bottle rockets in their direction as a form of practical celebration.
Wishing all of us Americans a joyous 244th birthday of our nation.

I have been told by several sources that when squirrels enter a vegetable garden it is really water they are after. Tomatoes are full of water. Try putting out a pan of water.

I did that. Began last season when we had an extended dry spell and I felt sorry for all the less annoying critters out there. My reward, and I'm not kidding, was to get a tomato chunked at me from somewhere up in the tree over the water pan. Since then it's been full on jihad between me and squirrels. In previous years, my dog, a great patriot, inflicted several casualties among the fur bearing Bolshevik nut miners. She seems to have lost her enthusiasm for that and I think the squirrels sense an opportunity to dominate the yard again. The struggle for Freedom continues.

Re: Happy and Safe Holiday
I recently bought a pair of "game cams" that have sensors to trigger the photo or video recording. I set them up in my rather large back yard.
So far I have captured (digitally) several type of birds, a bird-seed loving squirrel, a dozen mice, several rats, a stray cat, My own cat, my dog, an even a wild cottontail to my surprise. All here in the middle of Silicon Valley!
SO now I put water and bird seed out in several locations, and made a bird bath too that seems to have proven popular. I bought some food for the rabbit but it doesn't seem interested. Some research says wild rabbits don't really need our help, but I do it anyway.
Here's a sample clip...The cam may shoot as many as 150 30-second videos overnight: https://youtu.be/xhzCb1LCzp8

I think some squirrels are just vandals at heart. I don't own any plants that need special care but my poor neighbor has all kinds of cute little growing things. She's always putting the plants back into pots after squirrels have ripped them out. It can't be water so perhaps it's just a squirrelly taste for destruction.
