'La Brea Woman' fossil

Postby sixgunzloaded » Sun Sep 18, 2022 1:15 am

Just an interesting little audio tid-bit I found. Kinda cool for the science-minded among us. I didn't even know she existed until I found this. Makes you wonder how she could possibly be the only one.

If I had to guess the reason she's the only one we've found is that humans, even primitive ones, would be smart enough not to get stuck in the first place.

If they were harvesting the tar for water proofing they would be familiar enough with the pits to avoid the dangerous spots.

They probably also would have gone harvesting in group, so there would be help if one of the group did manage to stick themselves.

Or hey, maybe she was the first of us? Poor thing just couldn't resist taking a dip and got more than she bargained for.

I'd always heard her described as the "Murdered La Brea Woman" due to her damaged skull.

 I like that theory better than the ones offered in the clip. We could consider her our matron saint.

Yeah, they mentioned that possibility in the clip as well, but then somebody came along later and said it was more likely do to the natural shifting of the pit over time that caused the fracture. I guess we'll never really know for sure.
