Just wanted to say that I'm sorry to hear that Nessie. I couldn't tell exactly which bog you meant, but they all look great. It would be a shame if you had to leave one of them behind... :(

Some time ago, I posted a story "Allie's Awakening" that dealt with just the plot line of a guy coming along and finding a girl he knows using one of his sinking locations. In my story, it was all a pleasant sharing, but in real life, it could get freaky. Glad you are OK.

Well, ya know, it'd be just awesome if real life was like fiction.

If it was...I'd be seeing something in my in-box right now.

It would be a self-introduction where he tells me what his Quicksand Fans handle is and then he tells me his real name too. He proves that this is the truth with the exact license plate number that I wrote down. He loves everything I've ever done. And he's had a mysterious attraction to deep mud and quicksand all his life.

And he's very, very sorry about all this and he would like to meet for coffee, in a PUBLIC PLACE where there are people around, to explain why he was such a dork, and then he'll make everything completely right.

By now I think that the bogs in Hell will be frozen first.

My bet is he was just some random wacko. You're taking for granted he was there because he likes mud....mabye he was a pothead just looking for a private place to toke up. Definitely would explain the cheezy pickup line and the paranoia.

There's also the possibility he was someone who has no love for quicksand, mud, or sinking at all, and either caught sight of you that day and followed you in, or perhaps has been watching you for some time from afar and decided the time had come to make his presence known.

Perhaps the best course of action is to save the license plate number just in case the authorities need it and find a new place to wallow.

Actually, I think your theory is probably the closest to the truth. He's just thinking..."I like to walk here and so does she. Wow! We have SO much in common!"

As for the license number, sure, I still have it, and since muddy friends are worried, I'm not the only one any more.

Darn. . . I wish I lived closer, too. Sorry this guy turned up in the wrong place at the wrong time. I am also on the "big lumbering heavy" side, but I can gator-crawl through a bottomless bog with a pack on my back if needed. I am also pretty resistant to poison ivy/oak/sumac, so I could actually lie down on the stuff so you could walk over (just not with the boots, please.) Pardon me while I slip into daydream for a moment:

Nachtjaeger stands thigh-deep in the quivering bog, a black-bladed sword in his right hand and a long spear in his left. As he dispatches yet another rabid fanboy, he shouts over his shoulder at his companion: "Are you done yet? I'm not sure how much longer I can hold them off!"
 ;)

It's been nice to know there's guys that'll do this...and while it's late for this year, perhaps next year I will try to find somebody. I haven't minded being on my own, but I guess when I am on my own, I expect to BE alone.

Don't worry about the boots. I can hardly walk in 'em as it is, much less walk on a man, 'cause men aren't flat as rugs.

The boots are just for show.

It was REAL INTERESTING walking through the sinkholes and avoiding the poison sumac on the way to the pit. There is no way to put them on right before I sink because at that pit...there is no place to stand.

They don't get stuck, though. I was kind of surprised to find that out.
