Re: Star Trek - Phase II
I think Lunatic Space Vikings is a great title for a film... I'd watch it.

Can be seen in various episodes now in rerun of TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT.......
I swear, how that fucking idiotic brainbug got started I surely don't know. How we went from senior Commanders such as Kor and Kang, to raving lunatics eating raw meat and charging screaming into battle with bladed weapons against energy weapons is a mystery.
I think someone did a poll once , as to which would be the worst ass-raping possible versus say a Clone War-era Battalion; think the Klingons came 2nd. First....the Jem'Hadar. Dark comedy at it's finest, since they would just charge and charge and charge, never considering anything like tactics. Then again, they never displayed any concept of combined arms. Whereas the Clones would have Artillery (both projectile AND heavy beam) Airpower (gunships for massive can of ass-kicking, starfighters for airstrikes and strafing runs) Heavy down to Light Orbital -Bombardment capability (telling a star destroyer to bring the rain would be somewhat terrifying in the extreme

And wearing actual protective armour resistant to Chem and Bio weapons. With vision aids. Not a pretty sight
When Lucas was formulating / researching / writing the early movies, he watched tons of WWII movies. He actually cut together a pre-version of one of the epic space battles using movie footage of naval battles and aerial dogfights! So, when you model your universe on a well-documented reality, it shows.
One of the things that always bugged me in the Star Trek universe, when they showed "epic" space battles, you would see 20-30 ships, and at any moment, 4-5 weapons firing. The sky should be FULL of beams, bolts, fields, torpedoes, etc. Go back to the footage from actual wars... ever seen a capital ship in action? Those things radiate death in all directions and multiple calibers simultaneously and continuously.
The difference between theory and reality is that, in theory, there is no difference between theory and reality.

Re: Star Trek - Phase II
This, is gonna be good
Prelude, about 20 min in length, is set like a History Channel episode, like you might see about the Pacific War, or a battle. Laying out the groundwork for what is to come. How all of Archer's little forays with the Empire were utterly dismissed as annoyances (loved that...) The opening moves by the Klingons treating starfleet with no respect, contempt even, as they smashed them aside (underlining badly the Roms for making war; all the scheming and plotting of a Rom = waste of air) When the best thing your enemy has to say is that you are 'dying well', well girls, things are pretty bad. Nice little touch by Gary Graham as Soval, mentioning that an Andorian 'associate' of his
once said "dont push the pinkskins onto the thin ice...." Gee. Wonder who that was...
Enter Ramierez...assuming command of Starfleet, looks to have been like William Halsey taking command in the Solomons Campaign. Change in plans, change in focus; rushing the new Ares-class combat cruisers into action with veteran captains. Especialy Kelvar Garth, Garth of Izar as the Klingons called him. Along with Sam Travis and Sonya Alexander, the best captains in the fleet. In 30 days Starfleet took back the systems that had been conquered in over 6 months. THATs how good the new ships and commanders were.
The Klingon Supreme Warlord....(no lunatics, thank you director!) was Kharn...Kharn the Undying (love that name) who is very much a Thought Admiral, and like the best, ignored to some degree by the High Council - lucky for our side. He clearly believed that war was inevitable, but go to war with the maximum possible advantage you can muster. Short War. Smart. After the defeats and pushbacks, he advocated his original plan -- deploy the brand-new under construction D-7 in large numbers , since they would now be needed to win the war. Using them force a decisive battle and destroy Starfleet utterly and END the war.
Starfleet has heard of the D-7 (the classic Klingon Battlecruiser you know from the show -- and upgrades kept them in service a century later...) so they know that they have to do something. Their own counter to the D-7 , the new Heavy Cruiser design is being rushed into completion, towed to the Axanar system's orbital shipyards. Ramirez has his 3 best captains assembled, and asks them for ideas for a battle plan. Something that will end the war in one stroke. As Sam put it, plan 1 wasn't worth spit
Plan 2 was ok, nothing spectacular. Plan 3.... was Garth's. When he saw it, after several minutes of silence....told Garth "absolute insanity...a bloodbath waiting to happen..." and that was the plan that Ramirez eventually signed off on. (**we are not told any details of the plan)
The effects are as good as anything from the studios. Using major actors was a stroke of sheer genius, and the major characters are perfect in their roles. For those unfamiliar with Trek history, the next Heavy Cruiser design is the Constitution-class. The outline in the docks is shrouded somewhat, but the short scene near the end clears any doubt, with the hull number 1701 shown clearly
I think I know what Garth's plan is
watch it
contribute if you can, even if just a few bucks
This doesn't raise the bar for fanfilms; it blows up the bar and shoots out the lights

Re: Star Trek - Phase II
Sounds to me like they just chose the Pacific portion of WWII for a plot.
