My favorite footwear for getting into mud has always been sandals to get to the mud, then bare feet to get *in* the mud. That being said, I am somewhat lucky to still be alive. I once went on a solo hike and waded through a few ice cold streams, barefoot. Now, for the majority of the hike, I did have running shoes, I just took off shoes/socks to wade across the streams barefoot. When I got back to my car, a cold wind was blowing. As I opened the car door, this wind was somewhat focused under the car, and I noticed one ankle was a lot colder than the other. I checked and found out I had sliced my ankle deep enough that I was looking at my vein. There was a lot of blood, and could have been quite a bit more, but I did not know I was anywhere near a naval hospital, and just drove back to my ship where I cleaned the wound as best I could and used bandaids to hold it closed until the corpsman got in the next morning.
With cellphones, "alone" isn't as big of a deal as it used to be. As embarrassing as it may be to tell about what you do for fun, it is *way* safer to do this with someone else there.
Back to footwear, though, I've seen these diving shoes that have toes. I want to try those for getting into the mud. The one time I saw a guy wearing them and wading, he couldn't shut up about how good they were.

Re: Sinking Footwear
Well, I would probably prefer neoprene socks.
I like the feeling of getting stuck, which I would wear wellies or booted chestwaders, however these prevent me from sinking as deep as I could without that kind of footwear.
I could go barefoot allowing me to sink deep enough, but the mud will push the legs of my rainsuit or rainpants up, getting inside them and then separating them from touching my legs, this is not ideal. Also, being barefoot exposes more skin to potential dangers in the mud, like being scratched by sharp objects (this has happened to me a few times, and it sucks, sometimes causing wounds exposing inner flesh or bloody painful ones) or bugs (I once had a foot parasite from the mud, that was no fun at all) and being cold.
It also doesn't really match the fetish.
With boots, they can simply be flooded and lost into the mud, one time the suction on the boots broke the footstraps on a rainsuit I was wearing when I tried to pull out.
Chestwaders, I like this, especially them getting me more stuck, however, they get flooded at my preferred depth. (Just past armpit deep, almost neck deep) If they fill, that could trash the waders, and very hard to clean the inside.
Neoprene wetsuit socks are the most ideal to me, but I am usually limited to wellies.
With the length of my ideal mud sessions, I can't get away with exposing much skin to the mud.
