That was awesome! I am always blown away by what you do, each post seems to be better than the one before! That was just fantastic! I have to say, watching you in that video that is better than a Viagra! (BOING!!)

I was out this weekend on the kayak (probably the last time for the season) and I found an old spot that I was at a year ago. Managed to work in to my shoulders and I stayed long enough to do the deed! The mud was just thick enough and when I mixed in some water and churned it to the bottom with my legs, it loosened up enough to make a deep sink possible.

However, two nights after I posted the links, I checked my email and found a notification that action had to be taken on one of the videos (SlwSnk2.mp4) because it was flagged as "inappropriate", and was therefore age-restricted (probably due to its grim ending). So, it looks like using a cryptic name such as SlwSnk2.mp4 with no description, and no comments, and other things didn't help make it obscure enough.

Where I live, here in BC, Canada, the lakes and ponds in the mountains accumulate organic sediments (decayed plants, peat, and perhaps decayed algae), and when these sediments get exposed, they provide some nice low density mud to sink into.

That is why I abandoned my other Edwin Lakes area pond mud in favor of this one, which I used a keyhole saw to expand this area a couple of years ago (uncovered more mud beneath the grass). I loved the consistency of this stuff, and knew that seeing it in action would appeal to others as well.

In this video, I did have my breathing pipe laying on the west side of the bog, just out of sight of the camera (roughly beyond the lower left corner), but unfortunately I never used it at all. In fact, I never used the breathing pipe and hose at all this year, due to very few opportunities to get out there thanks to cool unsettled weather in early summer that lasted until I started getting one injury after another starting in mid-summer. If I had more opportunities, I would have definitely lingered below the surface deeper with a hose or pipe to breathe through for quite a while. But, at least I did manage to linger beneath the surface close enough to suck air through the thicker fractured surface of the sucking mire for a while, as seen in these videos.

If you were to dive in head-first, it would have to be earlier in the season when the mud is softer, because if you tried it in the mud when it is this thick, you would likely be only able to instantly bury your head and part of your shoulders, assuming your head is the first thing to hit the mud, and not your hands/arms. But, there is the odd tiny stick here and there which I periodically find and remove, which could be a hazard for the eyes if you were to plunge in headfirst.

This is really one of a kind stuff, this deep, sticky, soft, non-watery and quaking mudhole you have there.
When i would find such a huge mudpit and dare entering it i would surely be stuck for good after a short time, my sticks would be useless at this place

I'm just wondering, have you shown Dave and Duncan this place, too? Just imagine one of the models, playing an innocent hiker...

This mudhole starts off rather loose with water on top early in the season (I sometimes help it along by loosening it further while it is underwater or thinner on top and thicker deeper down), but then gets exposed and thickens gradually, until it reaches maximum thickness in the late summer, as is illustrated in my videos I posted, which I dated.

If you aren't wearing stuff such as heavy boots or hip waders in the mud this thick, then escaping wouldn't be a problem, just a sure, gradual process. You saw how I was able to rise up to around waist deep before I couldn't get any higher, and then had to sit back to extract my legs to crawl to solid ground, without the use of any sticks at all. This stuff doesn't pack around you with time, so you can stay in it until the cows come home without worry.

I am happy to hear that you had a recent outing with a stimulating shoulder-deep sink , especially since in an earlier post you sounded like you haven't been able to get out into the field very often. While my final underbog sink was on September 9'th, and shown on video, my final sink of the season, which was chest deep, was on September 24'th. After that, the weather turned too cool, and has been getting progressively colder each week now, as we descend towards winter. I have yet to post my final 2 adventures yet, with pix, but it will be soon. BTW, if you have been reading my adventure postings, then you should already know the answer to the question that you posted and then subsequently removed.

LOVE your latest sink, Boggyman. It really seems amazing that you were able to get out of that bog, but you do it so quick, like a pro. It must be so heavy to be beneath all that!

As some of you may have suspected by now, I had decided to stop posting my adventures, which I did every year starting in 1998, 14 years in total. I had to spend several nights staying up until 2 am after each bikeride to get the details down, which made it harder for me to get up in the mornings. But, background pix and videos will continue to be posted. I have stuff from 4 outings to get posted, starting with this set of 3 video parts, which were taken at my Harris Creek quicksilt slide on Monday, June 11'th, my first sink of the season (the white balance was set wrong on this outing, which exaggerated the greens, yellows and browns a bit):




Here is some ordinary looking ground on a hillside. It feels somewhat damp, but reasonably solid. But, it is quite deceiving! A bit of pounding with one's feet, and the stiff ground begins to shift, and then turn into a quaking patch of thick, sucking quicksilt, ready to trap an unwary victim!






Part 1: Here is a patch of flat ground on a hillside that looks sooo innocent and harmless! But, watch what happens when a hiker steps into it, and gets stuck! The voracious thick rubbery quicksand starts to make interesting slurping and sucking sounds as it swallows the victim's feet and lower legs! Its struggling meal slowly gets sucked down deeper and deeper, unable to escape its muscular grip! During the long, drawn-out struggle, the victim keeps on trying to wiggle himself free to no avail! He just sinks deeper! He tries to churn the thick quagmire with his hands and arms (which also keep on getting almost stuck) to loosen it up enough to loosen its grip, but to no avail! He just sinks even deeper! The quaking surface of the thick, gooey ooze rises up to the victim's chest!






Part 2: Getting desperate, the trapped victim begins to struggle to try getting free before he gets swallowed any deeper, the mire at times making some interesting sounds as he struggles. But, it is very exhausting work trying to get free of the sucking tenacious grip of the deadly quicksand which just clings to him, and each time he gets too tired and stops to rest, the hungry quagmire sucks him back down again! Will he manage to finally free himself from the rubbery, doughy, gooey deathtrap? Watch and see!

i would think that being really dense as silty stuff usually is its probably not possible as its denser that boggys body,..... its easy in organic stuff though
