Costa Concordia trial concludes, Captain gets 16 years. Manslaughter, 6 months per count, he got off easy. The usual weepy-assed bullshit from the fuckwit wanna-be retard drift driver, but last I checked, despite the attempts worldwide of ALL captains to try and weasel their responsibilities down, there's only one fucking captain. And why they supposed to get the big money. They want to be narcissistic fuckheads blaming everyone else (trust me, seen it...) but when the steel grinds through rock, only one dipshit is responsible ultimately. ESPECIALLY in this case when the fuckwit in question had the con.

The issue that still remains, is that there were, and likely still are, mariners who think doing shit like this is cool beans and the passengers love it. For the best example of how to actually do it right, it's Titanic; but not the shitty emo-fest movie -- watch A Night to Remember, from Walter Lord's book. THAT portrays the mates and crew far more accurately, as professionals trying to save as many as possible and not start a fucking panic. It's not perfect, but it's a hell of a lot closer to reality.

That being said, while the ship had a planned route, it is my understanding (from what I read a couple of years ago) that the captain took the ship off it's route despite maps that warned of rocks and did a sail-by of a coastal town, to show off. Now, that rock that peeled a gash in the hull might have been missed entirely if he'd only been 20 or 30 yards further out, but to take the ship out of safety for a whim is so wrong. I wonder how well the families of the dead are being compensated.

I am not privy to all that went on in that court. If the captain did take his ship off the safe path to show off, then I would have a greater punishment. At the same time, I am surprised that a captain was given even that much of a sentence. I'm used to courts in general being lenient on the upper class.

Imagine if the driver of a Greyhound bus took a side trip to a parking lot and started doing donuts with the bus, then hit a car and flipped the bus over, and then climbed out and tried to walk away like nothing happened while the trapped passengers screamed for help. You have the sequence of events completely wrong

The fuckwit had done this before, so it was only blind luck this hadn't happened sooner. A Margin of Error of 30 metres for a fucking hundred thousand ton cruise ship steaming in excess of 20 knots is not a fucking margin at all. One degree off course or minimal changes in set and drift , and you are fucked. This isn't some bad fucking movie with emo retards trying to surf with a destroyer. That shit btw is just as retarded. They didn't just gash the hull, they EMBEDDED THE ENTIRE FUCKING BOULDER into the engine room, making sure not only did they wipe out the powerplant and engines, but ensure catastrophic flooding. The now-dead hulk blundered off to the NE and came about mostly from the law of physics. Drifting back down on the shore was maybe 20% use of bowthruster, 80% wind and pure fucking blind luck. Otherwise you would have had loss of life that would make the Titanic look like a yachting accident.

This guy was a fucking moron, at every conceivable level. But most of the crew was too, other than a select few. EJ at least had the grace to go down with the ship. He was spared the inquiries at least.
