I don't care how cute a baby lizard is...it grows...people should know that...if you cannot give it a Forever Home, do not bring it into the home at all!

Not sure if it's entirely an abandoned pet issue. There have to be quite a few for there to be worries about a breeding population of them. We were discussing it on my fish keeping forum and alot of the guys are tying it to the same source as the python issue they have down there--exotic pet stores and zoos wrecked in 1992 when Hurricane Andrew came through, tons of lizards and snakes from all over the world were never accounted for and probably survived.
I can see the appeal for certain people--how many Game of Thrones fanatics would love to have their own pet dragon?

I love lizards. I had one for a pet once. Reptiles are awesome. I had a snake too.

But...neither one of them was ever going to be five feet long!

That's the tricky part. For an animal that size you basically have to devote a small bedroom to it. If you really really like lizards it's within the realm of feasible but you have to really really like lizards haha.....

My lizard was approximately four inches long and already grown up. I can't remember what kind it was. It was really cute.

My snake grew to be 36 inches and it was a garter snake. I had it for seven years. Never knew if it was a boy or a girl. It ate worms and minnows (I happen to like rodents too, so I don't think I could own a big snake).

My philosophy is that if you will lose a fight with it if it gets mad at you, you probably shouldn't own it. Some big animals, however, mostly don't get mad at us. You know...like horses...they've lived with us for centuries and they are mostly pretty trainable. Big dogs can also bond with us. Komodo dragons, though? Do they fetch?

Snakes are mellow by nature and gentle enough when they are used to you, but they don't actually have much of a brain, which is why you should own ones that aren't big enough to choke you without having a clue that they're doing away with the very human who houses them and tosses them yummy live food.

I could never actually tell if my snake loved me, although it would be nice to think that it was so. With my dogs, there was never any doubt.

It's pretty much like owning a big snake as far as temperament goes. If you go out of your way to piss them off then yea, they can give you a nasty bite, but that's no different than most other 'normal' pets. 5 million people get bit by dogs every year in the US. Somebody who owns a 5 foot lizard really isn't any crazier than the guy walking his 200lb Irish Wolfhound down the street.
