Opportunity for the Creatively Inclined

First, let me emphasize upfront that what follows is something I have no financial interest in.

For anyone here with the ability to make a living through their own creativity, the region within perhaps 30 miles of the location of Studio 588 may represent a real opportunity as a place to live. The cost of living here is a LOT lower than most other places. The schools are terrible and access to health care is not so good but if those things are not immediately important then things such as the cost of real estate may be attractive. The principal reason for this is that there is very little in the way of well-paying work. Most people around here run ranches, grow trees for paper and lumber, or just drink a lot. Its NOT a place for anyone who needs a full time job with a living wage. However, if you are a writer, travelling performer, video editor, or do other things on your own, such that your actual location is irrelevant, then a place with a low cost of living may be a good place to be.

I know that a LOT of property is available here. Between my Studio and my post office, which is eight miles one way, there are currently eight different places for sale. Some are just lad and some are houses. The point is that a lot is available and that generally means low prices.

Again, I have no financial interest in any of this, except I suppose a general interest in seeing the area more prosperous.

If I wasn't stuck on the wrong side of the pond with a lack of 'appealing' qualifications etc. for permanent migration to the States, I'd look into it. The irony of course being that if I had skills that would make me worth having in the country, from your description there wouldn't be much scope for employment in your neck of the woods!


But 'tis food for thought in any case.

Sounds like paradise, if only I could talk my boss into letting me telecommute. My office can be wherever I plunk down my laptop but they insist on me working onsite.......

I suppose I should add that it is also suitable for someone who is retired, as I am, so long as immediate health care access is not of fundamental importance.

Rural life has its cons but the peace, quiet, privacy and freedom to do basically whatever you want on your own property more than makes up for the long commute to work. I'm in suburban purgatory now but planning on moving back to the woods where I belong in the next few years.
