One that really sticks in my mind is a Far Side comic (Gary Larson) in which a parrot is sitting on a tree over a quicksand pit with two pith helmest floating on it, repeating the phrase "Let go Morty, you're pulling me in! Let go Morty, you're pulling me in!"
Can't find it online though.

Wasn't there a Far Side cartoon about victims of the La Brea Carpets?

I definately remember the Far Side one with the parrot.
About the La Brea Tar Pit was it about a cave family someone saying something like "This is the last time we have a family reunion at the tar pits?" (words to that effect)
La Brea Carpets does sound familar.

I remember the La Brea Carpet, and also another one involving "arboreal quicksand" - quicksand that lurks in trees, ready to descend on its victims.

There is one on page 11 of The Far Side Gallery (No 1) showing a sign "Quicksand , be prepared" which has some hats on a flat surface and there is one on page 116 on the German version of "The Prehistory of The Far Side", the last catoon before Chapter 3, called Palaontologie, with a family in tar pits.
Hope that helps
