It's never good news to hear that a bog has been harmed...you are, however, the first person I know of to report a loss of a sinking spot by fire!

I too get just plain disgusted at the carelessness of people. If they have to smoke, at least make sure it's not smoldering any more before throwing it away!

I can't say anybody ever accidentally burned down one of my bogs but there are times I've found people's junk in them. Beer cans...styrofoam cups...trash. In fact, now is the time of year when everything everybody's thrown out the car windows all winter is suddenly exposed. The edges of marshes near roads can look suddenly appalling.

My condolences. I hope you find a new place and that this one will recover.

There was one time when I finally had a chance to go to the Elk Island National Park, east of Edmonton, Alberta, where they had quicksand (actually quickclay) springs (soapholes). But, as luck would have it, the Hayburger Trail that led to the area was closed due to the aftermath of a forest fire (I think in the previous year), with burnt trees that could fall down on unsuspecting hikers. So, they got a court order to make it a violation to enter that area, with legal consequences. But, recent torrential rains before I got there had flooded everything anyways, making my hikes around other potential areas turn up meadows surrounding ponds under 1 to 2 feet of water.
