Remembering Harmon Killebrew

Postby Robert » Tue May 17, 2011 9:24 pm

Another Hall of Fame player joins the great Team in the Sky.

"He hit 573 home runs over his 22-year career, ranking 11th all-time in the majors.
He hit 40 or more home runs in eight seasons, tied with Babe Ruth for second most."

His on field accomplishments assure him of greatness, his off field accomplishments rank him with
the all time best as well.

"Class,Dignity and humility each and every day as a hall of Fame-quality husband, father, friend, teammate and man."

Rest well Harmon, and thanks!

I remember Harmon Killebrew. He was such a big man that he inevitably had a presence about him. I was a Detroit Tigers fan as a kid, and I recall he and Frank Howard could hit a baseball harder and further than anyone else at the time. He had already started to slow down by the time I first saw him. Even at that, he wasn't someone I wanted to see come to bat when the Twins played the Tigers.

I consider Killebrew to be with Al Kaline as one of the classiest players I ever saw play.

I saw something curious about Killebrew on Yahoo! News. The Mall of America was built where Metropolitan Stadium once stood. There's a seat mounted on the wall of one of the amusement park rides in the mall. It looks out of place, but it marks the spot where Killebrew smacked a shot that went more than 500 feet from home plate.

So long, Killer. And thanks for the memories.

Growing up, we lived next store to Harmon' s cousin, and followed his career in the 1960's. He was a classy, regular guy, as was his family. A sad passing, but a great life.
