head down in mud

Postby mudboy19 » Wed Jan 11, 2012 2:47 pm

Hi there,

in then news i recently read about a guy who died in snow when he fell off his skies and became stuck head down in deep snow...

So now my question - does any1 know if its also impossible to get out of quicksand, a peat bog or whatsoever if you maybe accidentally fall into it the same way as the guy (head down)? ...

I walked thru peat bogs a lot and I am afraid a bit all the time that I get stuck and cannot get free again, but actually its worse if you slip and your head goes in first for example if you fall down off a wooden way over the mud...

I look forward to read your ideas/suggestions/...

The top part of your body is much lighter then the bottom half, and won't have nearly as much buoyancy you should have no problems using your arms to work yourself back out really fast.

There's a distinction between Quicksand and a Bog since they behave differently... Since quicksand tends to be thicker than most "deep mud," it would probably be more dangerous. On the other hand, it would make you more buoyant, therefore it depends on how far down you get. If - for some reason - you reach a state of equilibrium with your head under the quicksand, it would be extremely difficult to pull yourself up. Bogs usually have less suction, but again, it depends on the individual.

My mate got stuck headfirst in quicksand on the west coast of Tasmania, Australia on a trek there in 2015. He ran ahead of us without looking where he was going, and ended up submerged to his pelvis with his legs flailing. We worked out that he had tripped and gone flying into the puddle that couldn’t be seen until one was close enough. Two of us waded in carefully and grabbed his legs, which was no mean feat as he was kicking frantically trying to get out, and heaved him up with all our strength. He made a sucking sound as he emerged. He was ok, and maybe could have had a chance at escape if not for his backpack. The image of him stuck and struggling for his life in the quicksand and his kicking legs is forever burned in my memory. He was very lucky that we were never far behind him the whole time.
