I recall seeing a comic picture showing a Martian invader (like in 1938 or 1953) promising to blast the earthling with its ray gun just as soon as it can lift the ray gun in our strong gravity, three times more than at home on the red planet.
just had a notion... what if the Martian invaders didn't know about quicksand and the first ones out in Grovers Mill find they landed on this strange soft ground that is swallowing their delivery capsule and their war machines go down as well. the invasion doesn't happen because the Martians decide earth has a dangerous, unstable surface so they couldn't ever make it their new home. all their scientific genius can't figure out what water does to soil 'cause it doesn't happen at home.
so, show a frustrated Martian, its three-part eye sticking out of quicksand as it goes down. "how the Martian invasion of '38 was REALLY thwarted".

On a related note, I saw a comic showing a flying saucer hovering in the air, with a ladder extending from it down to a patch of quicksand, with bubbles on the surface.

I believe that was one of the "Far Side" series. As you'd expect, I remember the image quite clearly.

I recall Sergio Aragones also had a similar cartoon as part of his "Mad marginals" series in Mad Magazine...
