Nicely tongue-in-cheek.
As for the actual Xena scene - a terrible missed opportunity.

In a later episode, Xena's guilt about letting Callisto die in the dry quicksand without trying to save her manifested itself in a dream where Callisto was stuck in quicksand, and this time it was the good stuff! But, it was very short, with her pleading for Xena to save her, but Xena instead put her sword through her, before waking up from the dream, a bit shaken.
