Wow. I didn't realize that the presence of humanity was quite that obvious...at night.

I can even figure out where I am by looking at it.

it's also a good way to figure out where to go if you want to see stars at night... where i live, there is just too much light

Humanity makes a big print and it's easy to see where humanity is succeeding. Here's a great example. Look at the difference between North and South Korea. These are the same people sitting on the same land but separated by two different economic systems.

It was also useful for picking out the camps in Siberia of the Gulag; look for the lighted squares -- nothing else out there was illuminated.

Does it actually look like that from space or is it one of those photos where the shutter speed is slowed way down so the camera collects more light? If that's actually the visual that you get from the ISS I'm amazed.

These photos are composites taken by earth resources satellites. Thats why there are no clouds.
It's a dirty job but I got to do it for 27 years. Thank you.
