Fail.....So you're afraid that someone's trying to break in to your house, so you grab your gun and immediately.....go back to watching TV?
Retreating to the bedroom.....good. Grabbing the gun.....good. Now STAY there, grab a phone with the other hand, dial 911, and hope that your tax dollars go to work and save you the trouble. Pray for police but prepare for war.

Fail....HD weapon missing a weapon light. Being able to shoot your attacker is good. Being able to blind your attacker with a 300 lumen light so he can't shoot you while you're shooting him is better.

Biggest Fail of all.....hesitating to shoot when you had both opportunity and reason. If you're going to pull it out be damn sure you are both willing and able to use it because in reality the bad guy won't faint. Even if they surrender, holding someone at gunpoint is INCREDIBLY dangerous, even for trained law enforcement. Commit yourself to ending the threat to your life and don't take any changes.

If it was real she would have emptied the clip into his face, but they really would have been hyperventilating and having a spaz attack over that

Welcome to mainstream media. God forbid we give the common folk the idea they could defend themselves. :D
Not a big fan of handguns for home defense. Difficult to store so that they're easily accessible to you but not to anyone else. I'm a Remington 870 man myself. Might switch over to a Kel-Tec KSG if I can ever get my hands on one.

Well said, Mynock. If you're going to shoot at an attacker, empty your weapon. (That's how the police are trained these days.) Unless you hit something vital, some freak hopped up on crack, meth or PCP can ignore taking multiple rounds until they actually bleed out. As the quote goes, you may still get killed with your own weapon- but they'll have to beat you to death with it, because it'll be empty.

Umm. . . you meant to say "center of mass" not "face", right? :geek:

As to home defense, here's a true story. An acquaintance of my wife's was also in the Society for Creative Anachronism. She was NOT a small woman- probably 5' 9" and "in excess of 300 pounds." Despite her size, she was very fit- she could dance healthy younger men to exhaustion. Anyway, this lady didn't own a firearm- she kept a sword under her pillow. One hot summer night, she kept the patio door open in her AC-less apartment. She also slept 'au naturale'. At some point during the night, some young punk broke into her apartment and walked into her bedroom. She woke up to find him leaning over her. With a Banshee shriek she grabbed her sword (not a little scramisaxe or gladius, but a large war-blade) and attempted to take his head off. Luckily for her attacker he was quick enough to dodge her first swing. When last seen, her attacker was running at top speed down the street, with the Lady in hot pursuit, buck naked, screaming curses at him.

It's understandable that they didn't have her shooting the guy, given that apparently the advertisement was controversial as it was.

Of course, the really sensible thing would have been if they'd shown her getting the gun from the box and calling the police. If she was worried enough to get her gun, you'd think she would be worried enough to call 911.

One time when I was a teenager my mum went out shopping and someone broke in, I guess they saw her leave and assumed the place was now empty. I think they must have used a credit card or something to open the lock, I didn't hear anything until they were in. There must have been a couple of them, the moment one saw me he shouted "oh shit there's someone in here!" and they legged it. Called the police, nothing came of it.

In that video, at first I was thinking the fainting thing was silly - if they didn't want to show her shooting him, instead they could have had him saying "woah, don't shoot!" and then running away or something. But then I realised that by having him fainting and falling to the ground, they actually wanted to imply the idea of her shooting him dead. Without actually showing such a thing.

I live in the UK so of course the whole "gun for home defence" thing is an impossibility for me anyway. Though a couple of times I've seen army surplus stores and a few other places selling small crossbows... anyone know if they are at all effective?

It's a commercial. ...... its not like she was actually killing someone. But I suppose the gentle flowers would all be having strokes over that

nacht, FACE; if you cant hit a 18" target at less than 3 metres, you need more practice...

It'd be better than nothing....but the issue is you couldn't keep it cocked all the time (would damage the arms of the bow) and winding it or cocking it with the pull strings takes time. Your best bet would be pepper spray and a blunt object. Blind the SOB and then beat him like a rented mule.

I won't go any further with home defense advice except to say that if you should seek out professional assistance if you choose to do so with a firearm. Find a recommended class and take it. Then take the advanced class. It'll cost you some moderate coinage but it's worth it. You'll learn more than you think you will.
