The Near Death Nature of Near Shore Operations

Postby kham » Wed Oct 05, 2016 4:04 pm

From over at CDR Sal's

This happened several days ago, and as the comments suggest , it may well have been propaganda by the usual wallu snackbar bitches.
Other sources have provided information, and pictures, indicating "The ship was attacked by small craft (not a ship-to shore missile) who hit it with four RPG-7s et al that started fires then machine-gunned it with heavy machine guns (probably 14.5s). Some of the crew were injured but none killed and no passengers were harmed. The ship did not sink and has been towed to a UAE port for repair"

Which is more likely. Since a C802 or "Silkworm" -clone (SS-N-2 for the cold war and Harpoon students...) would have been an insta-kill on this thing. Photos show extensive damage. Please note, this is roughly the same construction materiel used in the LCS..... thus the retard usual suspects comments on Sal's. Pictures come from the UAE government, and are considered good and not faked

That awkward moment......when your battleships only weakness turns out to be bullets. Why'd they even bother to tow it lol.

It had a bunch of refugees on board, so abandoning might have been awkward, never mind costly in lives.

Comments suggest they will try and repair it as some sort of "legacy" project , which to me fucking translates into "jobs program" and "we can't admit its a piece of melted junk that should be just scuttled" It's doubtful in the extreme any underwriter would pay for this, so I'm betting the UAE will be paying themselves in cash

This was after all , a high-speed transport with no weapons and a civilian crew. What the LCS -swill bitches don't want to talk over, is the hull design, and materiels used are basically IDENTICAL. And their entire concept was supposed to be about "speed is our defence" Uh huh. And now, if you read the gurgling commentary from that dipshit Laz and his ilk, suddenly he doesn't know what the fuck you talking about, Willis. And it was never meant to deal with swarm attacks. Too fucking easy when they lie like that

Man, 2016 was really the year that Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged" went from parable to prophecy. One of the least-believable parts of the book is the character Ragnar Danneskjold being a pirate who loots and sinks ships carrying "foreign aid" from the struggling US to failed States around the world. No private ship could outrun or outfight the world's navies, right? But if the US Navy is going downhill this fast, that may well become a possibility.

Hmm. . . disguise an massively armored barge as a luxury yacht, and have the crew hang out topside playing sand volleyball and drinking margaritas when off-watch. Sandwich some good old fashioned RHA with a mix of overlapping ceramic tiles and oobleck-impregnated Kevlar. A few 20mm autocannons, a pantload of RPGs, and a few Silkworm clones would give it a sword to match its shield.

I wouldn't go that far. The experimental stuff (experiments tend to fail a lot, as Edison) just gets more attention then the humdrum everyday operations. Planes that don't crash and ships that don't sink are boring....... 8-)

Therin lies the massive problem: 8 years in, the LCS , cannot be described as "new" and "experimental" technology with a straight face. Not a single unit operational in the entire class. The people behind the concept, used buzzwords and PPP bullshit as a replacement for intelligent, logical thought. Naval Technology is EVOLUTIONARY, not REVOLUTIONARY. It has been that way for nigh on 250+ years. They wanted to ignore that, and have their cute toys. Thinking ideas from fiction have basis in reality. Do you know why a destroyer usually has on average, a crew of say, 250? Because, in combat, HALF of them might die. And, you need them for DC even if they do not. When you have a minimal crew, you cannot save your ship. No matter how high technology you say it is. And insufficient weapons on the ship. When you claim it is designed to fight off these 'swarm' attacks, then equip it with no weapons capable of doing that, you are living in a fantasy land. And then you argue about that. It is not rational

And sooner, not later, something will happen to one of these things in the wrong place at the wrong time, only people will die this time. And then all the hand wringing and finger pointing will begin, asking how could this be allowed to happen??

So it's fucked, it can't fight and it's only useful if deployed to Titan- Did Walter Mondale vote this through? Enquiring minds want to know.

This was after all , a high-speed transport

The LCS has minimal weapons, and cannot defend itself against a half-dozen bayliners. Never mind actual warships. This , is not a revelation from the blue. It only will be made out to be that (like now, as the LCS-fellatio brigade is trying hard) when one is unlucky enough to trade shots with something. The entire concept was made-up bullshit from the start. The idea that high-speed is defence alone, is retarded in the extreme. Ask PT-109 about how well that worked out when they got cut in half by a Jap Destroyer. Plus, if you REALLY want to choke the retards on things, point out that an Elco-class PT boat would ass-rape an LCS. And it has way more firepower.

Back when these POS things were initially conceived, the first thing most cynical observers pointed out (correctly..) was that these things were useful for only one thing: Command slots for O-5s. That is about it.

That, is also known as "A Jobs Program"
Wasting north of 400 million a crack on that, is fucking insane in the extreme. And on 2 different types. Be sure to send a thank-you to both the Navy AND your Congress, for lacking the balls to decide on one design. AND, making sure graft is spread around, just wonderfully

Is it just me, or is this the nautical equivalent of SLS?
SLS= Senate, um Space Launch System- Except that SLS will be more useful, if you're a fucking imbecile and like money wasted on an obsolete-
Oh wait; at least nobody will be shooting at SLS (except Friends Of The Earth and Greenpeace, and they are a problem easily solved with significant amounts of 7.62).

When the "You fucking morons chose poorly" bill comes in, those responsible will be retired, and/or working for the companies involved, and wont shed a fucking tear. Never mind a drop of blood. This isn't new. Research the Mk 14 Torpedo Scandal. You'll need to dig; it's extremely well covered up.
