I thought that current radar tech could pinpoint the launch coordinates of a ballistic weapon and have counterbattery fire inbound before the first round impacts. Need to set that up like a CIWS on automatic. Even 5" (127 mm) HE says "I love you too." 8"/203 mm says it more sincerely. Sort of counterproductive to use a million dollar missile or airstrike to take out a WWII surplus Howitzer or a worn out truck with a Katyusha rail.

Suggestion is the missiles *may have been C802 clones, but if so, they were fired out of envelope and with no targeting information. Which is par for snackbar cavemen who spend more time jumping up and down than listening to advisors. But as to your question, that technique only works if you have LOS to the launch point. Over-the-horizon stuff is a whole different matter, and why mobile missiles are so hard to deal with. You'd be lucky to have 5" and be in range. And we don't have 8" any more. Using iron bombs is one of the most efficient ways for killing stuff like this. But you need target information.

During the attack against USS Mason (DDG-87), the ship’s crew fired the missiles to defend the guided-missile destroyer and nearby USS Ponce (AFSB(I)-15) from two suspected cruise missiles fired from the Yemini shore, two defense officials told USNI News.

Mason launched two Standard Missile-2s (SM-2s) and a single Enhanced Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM) to intercept the two missiles that were launched about 7 P.M. local time. In addition to the missiles, the ship used its Nulka anti-ship missile decoy, the sources confirmed. Mason was operating in international waters north of the strait of Bab el-Mandeb at the time of the attack.

Well it's going to make pointing those Silkworm's a lot more difficult.

What it really says is that the LCS ships would never have been able to operate under such a relatively mild threat. The bad guys might well have given the US Navy it's first loss to enemy action in decades if they had been facing one of the things. Instead they picked a fight with a class of ships with a mission statement that basically reads "if it flies it dies". It does show that the LCS can't operate in a low threat environment and is really intended as a "no threat" survivor.

Strategically it's also another example of the USA being involved in something without trying to be involved. I don't ever recall that working very well in any situation.
