Also remember the Death Star was being built in secret. Palpatine didn't dismiss the Senate until (was it) Episode V.
If they'd just let the contract to Kuat Drive Yards and built it in orbit off Kuat, construction would have been a lot quicker and easier.

Wonder if that will get explained.

One part of their story I not liking right now, is the main character's father being an important part of the Death Star Project. And we get the impression they press-ganged him into it, with him doing this to protect her while this results in her abandonment and subsequent fate. To me, that is retard dialed up to 11. The Empire would want someone important to be very happy with things, and making sure his daughter wanted for nothing, and lived in luxury would be a simple thing. Throwing money at him, and her, is not something the Empire would blink at for a project costing so much you couldn't scale it in present terms.

Of course, then they'd need the character to NOT be related to anyone on the design team. Gee! What a thought!

The problem is, that with even building it someplace secret, SOMEONE has to get the contract for running supplies and construction materiels to it. And the sub-assemblies. And "what the hell are we paying Byrel Shipping 20 Trillion credits for 'miscelaneous supplies' ??"
That sort of thing. Even the black budget would show a dent. And unless you sequester the entirety of those building, designing, and supplying this thing - plus all the naval personnel - for the duration - then SOMEONE will say something to someone.
The scale is just too big. And that, is probably what happened in the first place.

Two words: Big Dig. And that was just a hole in the ground, not a moon-sized space station.

That is true :P
However - THAT was a political futz-up of the highest magnitude, an ongoing frabbing jobs program....

The Death Star, was blacker than black. Obsidian. While word of it likely spread, actual politicians and senators knowing about it, well....approaching zero, most likely.

Also, from some of the 'new' EU, we get the distinct impression that the initial assembly was in the Geonosis System, and the idea is given that the former inhabitants have been removed - referring to it as "that irradiated sphere''... Um..

A friend of mine works in Boston, and has to ride through that mess every day. First, she has to car pool because of parking. She's an admitted control freak, so having somebody else drive is tough on her to begin with. Second, she's claustrophobic. So going into ANY tunnel is a problem for her, much less one that has already had the roof fall and kill someone. The stress was literally making her sick. Her doctor finally told her she either needs to find a new way to work or change jobs- she has car pool-tunnel syndrome.
