Biggest risk imho? You go all the way, need to come up to breath, and then suddenly realize you don't have the strength to do that. Panic.......glub.

i have never yet seen any kind of video showing anyone submerging completely in real quicksand,. are there any out there that can prove it is possible?

I've had several experiences, all discussed here in years before, that I think will illustrate what can go wrong, quickly, and ruin your day.

The submergence after Kristine's White Bra and Pantie Scene when the mud was too think for her to get back up after a lot of effort to get under.

Walking across a coal slurry pond with water on top. I am convinced that if I hadn't been hanging on to the side of a canoe at the time it would have been like something out of Hollywood. The bottom required constant moving of my feet to try and stay on top. There was enough water on top that if I had slowed down I'd have been stuck with my head underwater. Dave, Kristine, JT, Pam and Rob were present but I was at one edge of the group and I think it was softer for me. It was a minor "Oh shit..." moment.

The time I put a hand on Stormy Rose shoulder and pushed her under to the length of my arm. After telling he she would pop back to the surface I was startled to find that she just stayed under without moving. The sand quarry we were in had been saturated with recent heavy rain and the feeling under my feet was that the denser stuff was somehow on top. When I pushed her under she really had the denser material on top. I reached down and put a hand under her arm and pulled her straight up. This was her rookie effort and she was unaware of any need for concern. I played it cool and said nothing but if either of us had panicked or been less experienced it would have been disaster in just a few seconds. That stuff on that day was the greatest quicksand like goo I've ever seen. I believe this was captured on video but since I'm in it you'll just have to take my word.

To summarize - Will you find a spot six feet in diameter and ninety feet deep in the middle of a mountain top jungle like Tarzan? No. Are there natural bogs and quicksand like places with the potential for you to sink yourself into a potentially dangerous or fatal situation? I 100% guarantee it.
It's a dirty job but I got to do it for 27 years. Thank you.

Yea, pretty much everything that Duncan just said.

We have filmed a lot of submersions over the years. They are for entertainment. They are not intended to give anyone a false sense of security.

If I wanted to stress something on-topic for this discussion, it would be this; I would never, ever, add weights to a model in a natural location. Period.

I have gone under a gazillion times but I call any mudpit deep enough to play the role of quicksand "quicksand". I guess I did encounter the textbook stuff once, and you would be right about how hard that was to submerge in, but if it doesn't work, it's no good anyway.

I have known people who confessed to weighting themselves but I would never do this...ever. It could turn a safe location that I've used fifty times into a death trap if I somehow can't get out because of those weights.

It's way easier to just move to other quicksand. If it's deep and it's fun, it's quicksand. Always.

Exactly! My favorite pit was shoulder deep, and its consistency was thick enough to provide resistance to moving around, yet not so thick as to prevent a relatively smooth submergence. It had a fair bit of water in it, so I was able to lift my legs up underneath to float about chin deep... a bit of wiggling and I was able to slowly slip under without needing to use my arms to force myself down, which made for a more "Hollywood" type sink. It was always a bit of a struggle to extract myself out afterwards, but I was able to bob free easy, as in popping my head and shoulders up, so there was little risk of being stuck with my head under.

That worked fine for me, especially as I can't swim. ;)

Sungirl,

I would just be really careful and use proper judgment. There was one time we went sinking the mud was soft enough that there was no problem getting out. There was another time where we were not that deep, but the mud was so thick that neither of us by ourselves could ever get out, and although it was thrilling to be stuck, a little scary as well. It depends upon a lot of factors. I always worry about safety, and would never sink alone deeper than my knees or thighs under any circumstances.

So, adding extra weight could make submergence easier. But it isn't safe.

It's not the gong down part, it's the coming back up part.

Jump on a trampoline. The air around you is quicksand and the trampoline represents your natural buoyancy.
Now get off the trampoline, put on a set of 5lb ankle weights, and try to jump. Before you could probably go 10ft up into the "quicksand" with little effort. Now you're probably lucky if you can go 2 feet up, because not only are you heavier, but your "buoyancy" is gone too. It's a double whammy.

Being a total idiot-with a stuck fetish -I sink in any mud I can find, to any depth I can attain & most often on my own. Knowing how much a pair of boots can weigh one down I suggest that any sort of body weights could be very close to a death wish
Advice from an experienced if slightly foolhardy sinker-Don't try them!!
