New member intro and a quick question (pun intended)

Postby mud_dreamer » Sun Jul 30, 2017 9:27 pm

Ok so I have had a dormant fetish toward sinking in mud/sand/clay since I was around 10 yo. My brother and I (my idea) made a mud trap and trapped one of his friends. He started crying so I panicked. I ran and got a 2x4 to pry his feet out. I also recall a brick factory where I used to live (south side of Chicago) which had its own clayhole. I am a baby boomer and there were as many as a dozen kids swimming, wading, and of course playing mud monster. The clay was absolutely homogeneous and not too sticky. I thick that was the best clay I have ever experienced to date. I may have a gravel pit silt pond scouted but I want more experience before venturing into that. I did find real knee deep quicksand there and I could tell that being alone kind made me cautious. There was deeper.

Ok, so for the question. For the last couple days I have been scouting sinking locations. I have found a few... mostly knee deep and not too hard to get out of. Well today I hit the jackpot. Heavy clay and I am pretty sure that if I work at it I will sink to my waist at least. My concern is that I could become seriously stuck with nothing to pull on. I am wondering if I work it alot will it be less sticky? I have decided to keep a rope handy just in case I have problems getting out. Has anyone ever been in this situation? Could you give me some advise? I am planning on leaving in an hour or so to go "fishing" ;) .

Any advise is greatly appreciated.

I had a great time even though I was overly reliant on the rope. Next time there I will use my hands more to get out instead of pulling on the rope to get out. The mud was very sloppy on top and I was trying to keep my hands clean so that I could open beer cans. I also found another place where the mud was almost as deep and a little stiffer. I used my hands more and sank to my elbows just to get out. Had the rope there but did not use it at all. I can see now where this is heading. Find a deep spot and get real stuck and hopefully I can get out without using the rope. I am actually felling like I am getting a great workout from this.

For some reason I really cracked up laughing reading that.

Not intended as any kind of criticism, though - you're there to have a good time, why not have some beers?

But yeah that does make playing out the quicksand fantasies a bit trickier, if you're trying to keep your hands clean!

I am glad to hear that you got a chuckle out of that quagmire_uk. I opened two cans without thinking about the mud. I could taste the mud so I spit out the beer and I just dumped the can. I am concerned that I could get a Giardia infection from the bacteria in the mud. There is always some (hopefully just a little  ) cow poop in the stream.

There is a clear running stream within 15 yards of the mud location so I can clean up nicely. I enjoy scouting new locations as much as the mud play itself. I am a fly fisherman so I can scout in full gear and no one would ever be the wiser. The gear protects me as I wade through nasty brush. We have some extremely remote locations on public land. Very exciting, just need to stay safe.
